Nigeria Launches New Minimum Standards for Senior Secondary Education
The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched new minimum standards for senior secondary school education. Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, inaugurated the standards, developed by the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), at an event organized by NSSEC in collaboration with Google Research.
Improved Quality and Consistency
The minimum standards aim to ensure consistency, accountability, and measurable improvement in the education sector. According to Dr. Alausa, “The world is undergoing a technological revolution, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at its core. AI is no longer a futuristic concept but a present-day reality, transforming industries, economies, and societies.”
Digital Literacy and Teacher Training
The government plans to integrate digital literacy and AI-driven pedagogical practices into teaching methodologies. A virtual training program, sponsored by Google Research, will enhance AI pedagogical skills among senior secondary school teachers across the 36 states and the FCT.

The integration of AI into pedagogy will enhance learning experiences, personalize education, and develop critical thinking skills among students. Dr. Alausa emphasized that the government aims to prepare students for careers in a technology-driven world, where AI literacy will be fundamental.
