NECO Enhances Exam Efficiency with New OMR Scanner
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has acquired a high-performance Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) scanner to improve the efficiency, credibility, and security of its exams. The acquisition was announced during the inauguration of the new scanner at NECO’s ICT Department in Minna on March 6, 2025.
Improving Exam Accuracy and Speed
During the inauguration, the Registrar of NECO, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, emphasized that the new scanner would help enhance accuracy, speed, and reliability in NECO’s examination processes.
Advanced OMR Technology
The new OMR scanner, the Scantron Insight 1500c, is known for its precision and high-speed capabilities. It can scan over 15,000 sheets per hour, or 250 per minute, significantly improving the processing speed for NECO’s exams. Prof. Wushishi mentioned that this high-performance equipment would ensure faster and more accurate results processing for millions of candidates worldwide.
Cost and Capabilities
The newly acquired scanner, which cost around N500 million, has the capacity to simultaneously scan and score OMR sheets. This capability allows NECO to handle large volumes of scripts more efficiently, aligning with the Council’s goal to streamline its data processing systems.

Prof. Wushishi pointed out that the acquisition of the new scanner is part of NECO’s ongoing commitment to leveraging technology to enhance all aspects of its examination processes. This move reflects NECO’s dedication to providing reliable and accurate examination services.
Training and Staff Preparedness
The Director of NECO’s ICT Department, Mr. Goddy Usioboh, remarked that the new scanner aligns with NECO’s vision of delivering world-class examination services while maintaining the integrity of assessments. The Technical Adviser from Scantron Company, Mr. Tom Harry, expressed satisfaction with the ICT staff’s high level of dedication during their training on the new machine.
