Wike Partners with Lombardy Region to Establish Vocational Training Institute for FCT

On March 6, 2025, during a meeting in Milan, Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of Nigeria, secured a partnership with the President of Lombardy Regional Government in Italy, Attilio Fontana, to enhance vocational education. Fontana promised that his government would collaborate with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to establish a vocational training center in Abuja and facilitate the training of youths from Abuja in Lombardy.

Focus Areas: Vocational Education and Agriculture

The discussions focused on two key areas: vocational education and agriculture. Wike expressed his gratitude to President Fontana for the warm reception and noted that there had been prior discussions with Italy’s ambassador in Nigeria to explore ways of collaborating with Lombardy. Wike emphasized that Abuja has vast agricultural land and that a partnership could foster agribusiness growth in the capital, as well as provide vocational training, particularly in ICT and other technical skills for youth and women.

Lombardy’s Strengths and Future Collaborations

Fontana responded positively, highlighting Lombardy’s strengths in industry, agriculture, and vocational education, particularly in technical and innovation fields. He assured that an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) would be prepared immediately to formalize the collaboration.

Key Attendees

The meeting was attended by other key FCTA officials, including Dr. Danlami Hayyo, the Mandate Secretary for Education, and Lawan Geidam, the Mandate Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development.
