Benue SUBEB Chairman, Dr. Grace Adagba, Appointed as UBEC North Central Sub-Dean
The Executive Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, has been appointed as the Sub-Dean for the North Central region of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). This announcement was made during the ongoing UBEC-SUBEB Management Meeting held in Abuja.
Presentation of Progress Report
As her first official task in this new role, Dr. Adagba presented a detailed progress report for the North Central region. The report highlighted key achievements, ongoing initiatives, challenges, and future goals aimed at improving basic education in the region. Dr. Adagba’s presentation focused on the effectiveness of UBEC interventions, state-led educational projects, collaborations with donor agencies, and recommendations to further advance basic education.
Commitment to Advancing Basic Education in Benue State
In a statement signed by the press officer of Benue SUBEB, Emmanuella Akese, Dr. Adagba emphasized the commitment of the Benue State Government, under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia, towards improving basic education. She noted that Benue State had successfully accessed three years’ worth of matching grants, which facilitated the construction of storey-building classrooms, digital and non-digital libraries, classroom renovations, and the drilling of boreholes for water and sanitation. Additional quality assurance activities have been carried out, including monitoring of Early Childhood Care Development and Education (ECCDE).
Key Requests for UBEC’s Support
During her presentation, Dr. Adagba also made key requests to UBEC, urging the commission to allocate more funding for vocational education, create more opportunities for state-led initiatives under the Teacher Professional Development Fund, and adopt a more flexible approach to the distribution of matching grant funds. This flexibility would allow states to prioritize their educational projects effectively.
UBEC’s Response and Future Directions
In her keynote address, UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, commended the SUBEB chairpersons for their dedication to improving basic education. She acknowledged the progress made over the years but also highlighted ongoing challenges such as inadequate funding, infrastructure deficits, teacher shortages, and the need for quality learning materials. Garba reaffirmed UBEC’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for education and expressed optimism that the ongoing discussions would establish a strategic roadmap for improving Nigeria’s basic education system.
