Court Rules in Favor of Professor Austin Angba
The National Industrial Court in Calabar has ordered the reinstatement of Professor Austin Angba as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), after months of being sacked.
Unlawful Suspension
The court ruled that Angba’s suspension by the university’s governing council in 2024 was a violation of the Act that established UNICROSS. This decision marks a significant turning point in the ongoing governance issues at the institution.
Restoring Stability and Governance
Stakeholders are hopeful that Angba’s reinstatement will restore stability and effective governance at UNICROSS, allowing for a renewed focus on academic and institutional development.
Background of the Suspension
Angba was suspended indefinitely in 2024 by the varsity Governing Council on allegations of misappropriation and misconduct. However, the court has now deemed this suspension as unlawful.
Recent Developments
This development comes on the heels of the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, dissolving the Governing Council of the school and appointing Professor Francisca Bassey as the new Acting Vice Chancellor of the University and Dr. Fidelis Ugbo as the Pro-Chancellor.
