FG Launches New Committee and Reporting Platforms to Address School Bullying in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Education, has set up a seven-member committee to tackle bullying in schools. The committee’s role will include overseeing reported bullying incidents, reviewing cases, and taking necessary action when required. This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe learning environment for students.

These platforms are designed to provide victims and witnesses of bullying with a direct, confidential way to report incidents without fear of retaliation. The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, emphasized the importance of addressing bullying and stressed that any attempt to cover up bullying incidents by school administrators or teachers will not be tolerated.

This initiative is aligned with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes education as a key driver of national development. The government is also working on a National Policy on Anti-Bullying, which is expected to be finalized and presented to the National Council of Education (NCE) for adoption by early 2025.

In related news, the Federal Government has inaugurated a 25-member committee to oversee the Nigerian Education Data Initiative (NEDI), which aims to create a centralized, harmonized educational database for the country.
