FSS Oyo Matriculates 459 New Students, Prepares for University Status Elevation
The Federal School of Surveying (FSS), Oyo, has matriculated 459 students for the 2024/25 academic session during the institution’s 36th matriculation ceremony held recently.
Rector’s Address to New Students
The Rector of the institution, Dr. D.N. Olayinka-Dosumu, welcomed the new intake, assuring them of a high-quality education in technical surveying and geoinformatics, fields that are in demand in the labor market. She emphasized that the profession would also offer them opportunities for self-employment. She congratulated the students for choosing the right career path and urged them to abide by the institution’s rules and regulations as worthy ambassadors.
FSS: Beyond a Monotechnic Institution
Addressing the public misconception that FSS is a monotechnic institution, Olayinka-Dosumu highlighted that the school, founded in 1908, now offers accredited programs in cartography, GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and computer science at both the Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels. She reassured that all these programs are fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), with more programs on the way.
Efforts to Achieve Degree-Awarding Status
The Rector also shared the school’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its status to a degree-awarding institution. She commended Senator Yinus Abiodun Akintunde for sponsoring the bill to upgrade FSS, which is currently in the National Assembly. Olayinka-Dosumu expressed optimism that the bill would soon pass and receive the President’s assent, paving the way for the school to be renamed the Federal University of Geoinformatics.
Upgrades and Developments at FSS
The school is undergoing significant upgrades to its teaching infrastructure, research facilities, and human capital to meet university standards. Many of FSS’s lecturers are pursuing doctoral degrees in preparation for the school’s new status. The library is being stocked with updated materials and is fully virtual. The school also boasts advanced teaching and research facilities, including artificial intelligence, which has been incorporated into the curriculum.
Appeal for Government Support
Olayinka-Dosumu appealed to the Federal Government to extend the TETFUND facility to the school, ensuring that it has the resources needed for its elevation to university status. She also highlighted the school’s strong Governing Council, composed of leaders from various ministries, including the Armed Forces, which is dedicated to advancing the institution’s goals.
