Hopes Rise for Oke Ogun University
There is growing optimism that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will soon sign into law the bill for the establishment of a federal university in Oke Ogun, Oyo State. This comes after the intervention of prominent indigenes of the area, led by Professor Segun Gbadegesin, a close associate of the president. The bill, which had been stalled since it was passed by the previous Senate under President Muhammadu Buhari, gained traction following efforts by Oke Ogun leaders, especially after the president established other universities across the country, but overlooked the Federal University of Agriculture for the region.
The Role of Oke Ogun Elites
The intervention by Oke Ogun elites, including Professor Gbadegesin, was based on the belief that the university would strengthen the region’s role as the “food basket” of Oyo State. The proposed university is seen as essential not only for improving food security but also for bringing federal presence to the area.
