Lagos Govt Launches Learners’ Support for WAEC, NECO Candidates
Ahead of the May/June Senior School Certificate Examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO), the Lagos State Government has launched the Eko Learners’ Support initiative to assist students in preparing effectively for the exams.
Unveiling of the Initiative
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, introduced the e-learning platform on Tuesday at the State’s Education Resource Centre, Ojodu.
The initiative, developed by educators under the State Ministry of Education, is designed to broadcast lessons on Lagos Television (LTV) and various social platforms. It employs 30 proficient teachers, rigorously selected, to facilitate about 320 lessons in 10 core subjects, including:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Economics
- Government
- History
- Literature-in-English
- Yoruba
Features of the Initiative
- The TV programme will run for 26 weeks, leading up to the May/June WASSCE.
- Each episode will last 30 minutes and include past WAEC and NECO questions.
- Lessons will be archived on social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) for future access.
Support for Public and Private School Students
The Commissioner emphasized that the learning materials would be accessible to both public and private school students, particularly those in terminal classes. He noted that while the state government covers WASSCE registration fees for all SS3 students in public schools, it also aims to support students registering independently for NECO exams.
Commitment to Educational Excellence
The initiative is part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s efforts to ensure quality education and improve students’ performance in external exams. While students’ performance in WASSCE has fluctuated, the government seeks steady improvements through targeted support.
Unique Features of Eko Learners’ Support
According to Alli-Balogun, the platform offers a two-way learning experience where students can:
- Access materials at their convenience.
- Provide feedback and ask questions.
- Engage in collaborative studies with peers.
All lessons align with the state’s curriculum and the syllabuses of WAEC and NECO.
Students’ Reactions
At the launch, some students praised the initiative, noting its usefulness in preparing for their exams, particularly during financial challenges that make private tutorials unaffordable.
The Commissioner encouraged students to utilize the platform fully, emphasizing that education is a lifelong journey.
