Niger Government Eliminates PTA Fees for Public Schools
Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has abolished Parents Teachers Association (PTA) fees for parents and guardians of students attending public primary and secondary schools across the state. The governor announced that the state government will now fully cover the costs previously borne by parents under the PTA.
Governor Bago made this directive on Thursday during an official visit to Sarkin Pawa in Munya Local Government Area, as part of his inspection of ongoing regional development projects. He warned school authorities against collecting PTA fees, stressing that violations would attract sanctions.
“This government has taken over the responsibility of PTA fees for all children in public schools in the state. Parents and guardians are no longer required to pay PTA fees for their children or wards. Headmasters and principals of public schools must cease collecting PTA fees from any student. My government will take action against anyone found in violation of this order,” Governor Bago stated.
The governor also encouraged parents to enrol their children, particularly the girl-child, in school. He emphasised that a lack of school uniforms should not prevent children from attending school.
“Allow your children to go to school. School uniforms should not prevent any child from receiving an education. If any teacher sends your child home for not wearing a uniform, please report them. I will ensure they are dismissed,” Bago warned.
Additionally, Governor Bago pledged to construct a road linking Sarkin Pawa to Kaduna State, build a modern market, and provide access to clean drinking water for the area. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of ongoing road projects and urged contractors to ensure timely completion.
The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Barrister Moses Magaji, and the Commissioner for Education, Peter Sankara, commended the governor’s people-centred approach. The Chairman of Munya Local Government Area, Aminu Najumi, also expressed gratitude for the governor’s visit, noting the improved peace in the region due to increased security presence.
