SSANU Women Call for Suspension of FUOYE Chancellor Over Alleged Sexual Harassment

The National Women Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has demanded the suspension of Prof. Abayomi Fasina, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), following allegations of sexual harassment by one of its members. The committee is urging key stakeholders, including Nigeria’s First Lady, the National Assembly, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to lend their support to the cause. They have also threatened to protest at the National Assembly if no action is taken.

Vice Chancellor Denies Allegations

In response to the accusations, Prof. Fasina has vehemently denied the allegations. He maintains his innocence, describing the claims as blackmail. He further stated that a police investigation had cleared him of any wrongdoing and that the woman involved had written a statement retracting the sexual harassment claim. Fasina emphasized that the accusations were defamatory and unjust.

SSANU Women’s Demands

Despite the Vice Chancellor’s defense, the SSANU Women Committee insists on his suspension to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation. The committee has also called for the re-composition of the panel investigating the matter and the reversal of the suspension of two SSANU members. Additionally, they have demanded increased protection for female staff from workplace harassment and intimidation.

Ongoing Investigation

The case is currently being investigated by a nine-member panel set up by FUOYE’s Governing Council to examine the allegations of sexual harassment. The SSANU Women Committee has urged for swift and fair handling of the matter to ensure justice is served.
