Tinubu Approves Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) Transition to Federal University
President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the conversion of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), located in Ijagun, Ogun State, into a Federal University. This decision, announced on Friday, was made public through a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy).
About TASUED: Nigeria’s First Specialized University of Education
Established by the Ogun State Government in 2005, TASUED holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialized university dedicated to education. The university is named after Dr. Tai Solarin, a prominent activist and the founder of Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun State.
TASUED Becomes Ogun East’s First Federal University
With the federal government’s intervention, TASUED will become the first federally owned university in Ogun East senatorial district. The university already boasts well-developed infrastructure and academic programs, which will facilitate a smooth transition with minimal federal investment.
President Tinubu’s Acknowledgment of Key Figures
President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over the university, which is one of the state’s finest educational assets. He also highlighted that the transition is a way to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the free education program in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating Nigerian children.
Tribute to the Awujale of Ijebuland
The president further acknowledged the role of the Awujale of Ijebuland in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, shortly after its establishment. This move is also seen as a tribute to the Awujale’s support for the institution.
Expanding the Federal Government’s Focus on Education
With TASUED’s new status, it becomes the third federal university focused on education, joining Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo. This development aligns with the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to improve teacher education and enhance the quality of education across Nigeria.
