University of Ibadan to Harness Research Innovations for National Growth
The University of Ibadan (UI) is preparing to utilize its innovations and research outcomes to drive national development. Professor Peter Olapegba, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), made this statement during a courtesy visit from a team of Innovate UK Business Connect. Olapegba noted that the university is committed to commercializing its research products and outcomes to benefit the country.
UI to Set Up Committee for Commercializing Patents and Innovations
Professor Olapegba revealed that the university has established a committee focused on the commercialization of patents and intellectual properties developed by its researchers. This committee aims to foster partnerships with businesses and funding bodies to ensure the transformation of ideas, innovations, and research results into practical solutions.

Over its 76-year history, UI has played a crucial role in generating knowledge that benefits local and global communities. Olapegba emphasized that the institution’s commitment to research excellence continues to make it a vital player in academic and innovative partnerships, both within Nigeria and internationally.

Despite challenges related to funding, UI has cultivated a culture of excellence in research and teaching. Olapegba expressed the university’s eagerness to partner with Innovate UK Business Connect to commercialize its research products and foster strategic collaborations in qualitative research.
Innovate UK Business Connect: Supporting Global Research Collaboration
Dr. Joanna Scales, the leader of the Innovate UK team, explained that Innovate UK is a government-funded organization supporting research and innovation both in the UK and globally. She highlighted their ongoing program, the ‘Climate-Smart Agricultural Partnership,’ which involves collaboration between the UK, Brazil, Ghana, and Nigeria. The initiative aims to promote smart agricultural practices in these countries to improve food production, particularly in Ghana and Nigeria.
Focused on Agricultural Technology and Innovation
The partnership will focus on key areas such as climate-smart agricultural technologies, pests and disease management, soil fertility, and agroforestry. Dr. Scales further explained that the project, with a £40 million budget, will include funding for collaborative projects between universities and companies in the four countries, as well as opportunities for staff exchange and support for travel.
